GENERAL:
Q. Does it cost anything to participate in Step Up Spartanburg!?
A.

No, the use of the website is free to individuals. You may, however, purchase a pedometer from us to use for the program. Click here to purchase a pedometer.

For a modest per employee fee, organizations may register as a group to receive the basic program features listed above, plus a worksite coordinator kit, an in-house kick-off presentation to employees, promotional tools and inspirational materials, participation incentive packages, group email capability and group participation and progress reports. To learn more about the benefits of the worksite program click here.

Q. What is the goal of Step Up Spartanburg!?
A. The goal of the program is to increase daily physical activity levels of program participants. Individuals will be encouraged to boost number of steps each week by 20% eventually building up to: 10,000 steps per day for health… 12,000-15,000 steps per day for weight loss. For aerobic fitness try 3,000 to 6,000 of your daily steps at increased speed.

Q. Is Step Up Spartanburg! a weight loss program?
A. Step Up Spartanburg! is a physical activity program demonstrating that small, consistent changes to lifestyle can have significant impact on long-term weight management and improved health. Weight loss is a result of balancing your calorie intake vs the calories you burn off. By eating less and moving more, individuals will begin to reach this “energy balance” and achieve a healthy lifestyle.

Q. Will Step Up Spartanburg! share my individual information with sponsors or partners?
A. All submitted information will be kept confidential. Partners for Active Living will use only anonymous, aggregate data to evaluate the success of the program. We will not give, sell or transfer any personal information to 3rd parties.

Q. How do I add 100 steps?
A. It only takes a minute. Literally.
  • Do jumping jacks, jump rope, or just walk around the house for the length of a TV commercial break.
  • Walk out and check for the mail
  • Take out the trash, bundle up recyclables, dust the tops of your kitchen cabinets and fridge.
  • Pace – don’t sit – while talking on the telephone.
  • Go down every aisle in the grocery store, even if you do not have to.

Q. How do I add 1,000 steps?
A. Invest 10 minutes to get an extra 1K
  • Use the bathroom on another floor (up or downstairs) at work.
  • Get a push mower, and break the yard up into 10-minute chunks.
  • Wash the car - by hand.
  • Walk, rather than drive, your child to a friends house to play.
  • Get a dog
  • Vacuum two or three rooms, with vigor.

Q. I am already active…is Step Up Spartanburg! something I can do?
A. Yes. Step Up Spartanburg! encourages everyone to gain the health benefits of moving more, regardless of current fitness levels.

Q. Can I participate if I do other activities besides walking?
A. Yes. Wear your pedometer throughout the day AND while you participate in your activity of choice (let common sense prevail – no swimming). Tie your pedometer to your shoelaces while you ride your bike, hook it to your waistband while you jog or take an aerobic class… But in addition to your scheduled activity – be mindful of your opportunities to accumulate steps throughout your daily routine.

PEDOMETER/STEP COUNTERS:
Q. What is a pedometer/step counter?
A. Pedometers are a measuring instrument for recording the number of steps taken by walking.

Q. Why a pedometer?
A. A pedometer is a great motivating tool to get those extra steps! Plus they are easy to use and inexpensive.

Q. Why are pedometers so motivating to the people that have them?
A. Pedometers provide instant feedback on daily activity levels that is easy to understand and monitor. They create an awareness that inspires people to take more steps each and every day.

Q. How do I wear my pedometer?
A. Clip your pedometer to your waistband or belt, directly above the knee; be sure it is horizontal to the ground, not angled or dangling from your clothing.

Q. How do I know if my pedometer is working correctly?
A. Test for accuracy by setting the pedometer to zero and walking 50 steps. Check the display. If the reading is 45-55, your pedometer is functioning properly; if it reads more or less, reposition the counter on your waist and check again. Once you’ve determined the proper position, you are ready to begin tracking your steps.

Q. Why is my screen blank or why are the numbers strangely displayed?
A. You may need a new battery. A pedometer battery can be purchased at your local drug store. If you replace the battery and it still does not work correctly, it may be broken. Pedometers purchased through the Step Up Spartanburg! program come with a 5 year warranty. You may return the broken pedometer to us and we will replace it for you at no charge. If your pedometer was purchased elsewhere, be sure to check the warranty details that came with the step counter.

GROUPS:
Q. How do I get my organization started?
A. To get your organization signed up, click here. After you have filled out the group information, our Step Up Spartanburg! coordinator will contact you with a price quote.

Q. How much does it cost?
A. Per employee fees vary based on number of employees you wish to register and your type of organization. Click here to request a specific price quote for your worksite or contact our Step Up Spartanburg! coordinator at (864) 598-9638.

Q. I have employees or members that do not have access to the web/do not have emails. Are there ways to engage them in the program?
A. Yes. We can provide electronic files of paper tracking tools that can be reproduced at your convenience.

Q. How many participants should I expect?
A.

If the pedometer is free, you can expect a 50% participation rate, add 15%-20% if an incentive is being offered. If there is a charge for the pedometer, you can expect a 25-30% participation rate.

The project coordinator will be responsible for providing leadership, direction and motivation, and is critical to the success of the program. So, in general, the greater the promotion effort the better the participation.

Q. What data will I be able to access?
A.

Coordinators who sign up a group/worksite are able to access aggregate data through the “Admin” link on the My Page. They can generate reports on group participation and attrition, percentage increase /decrease in group steps per week, average steps taken per week per participant, and highest percentage increase per week.

Individuals not with a worksite will be able to track their average steps per day and week through a calendar form. They will also be able to monitor their percentage increase/decrease from previous week.
